Flowing? Dripping? Or Dry?

Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.

LOUIS L’AMOUR

How is your writing flowing today?  Is it coming in a strong, steady stream? A slow drip?  Or is your faucet stone dry?

Nothing can happen in my writing if I don’t sit down and begin.  There are a million things to do besides writing.  Today I am at my desk and one chapter is here that did not exist when I woke up this morning!

Madeleine L’Engle said,  ”Inspiration usually comes during work rather than before it.”  I have found that to be true in my writing. I don’t get much done if I wait for inspiration.

What about your spiritual life?  Is it flowing? Dripping? Dry?

When I make time to sit still and pray and reflect on scripture I find a connection to God that I would have missed in my busyness. “The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.” The time I spent with God this morning gave its benefits in peace and confidence.

Are you writing today. Have you had time for God?

How is it flowing?

  1. I always have time with God – it’s what life is, for me. When it comes to writing, I don’t personally find the sit-down-every-day approach at all helpful. It’s like nature, for me – I have fallow periods, and periods of abundant activity – trying to force things in the still times or slow things when I’m fully engaged just makes me feel frustrated and unhappy. Patience was, I feel, the very first lesson that being a writer taught me, twenty years and scores of books ago.

Sometimes, ok more often than not, the words of others can remind and inspire us of the importance of writing and spending more time with God when it seems the page or screen have remained blank far longer than we deem necessary. Thanking the Writing Sisters for this on time word.

  3. Thank you writing exactly what I needed. At this very moment, my facet is bone dry. This morning I have been a hard place. I am going to use this difficulty to propel me forward in writing the transformational chapters of my book Bloom Where You Are Planted. I thank God for meeting me right where I am here on your blog. Blessings to you both…

  4. Pushing the pen across the paper, even if just writing down what a coffeeshop friend is saying to me, works to get the inspirational fountains bubbling up, time and time again!

  5. Yep, had my more or less “formal” time with God–and yep, I write pretty much everyday, as HE keeps the faucet On (we don’t worry about utility bills!!). God bless you, Sisters–love, sis Caddo

  6. open the flow…yes, so true
sometimes a little trickle flowing onto the paper makes for a more grateful heart–today the flow is average and so it goes with God too…but it’s all good, for He brings gifts anyway…like your blog to my place.
    thank you.
my day is flowing nicely and i wish you both abundant light and peace ;)

  7. Usually true, although I do find inspiration when I’m not actively working on my writing (such as driving a car or gardening). I think as long as we keep our minds and souls open to all possibilities, inspiration is there for the taking.
