“He that loves a book will never want a faithful friend, a wholesome counselor, a cheerful companion, an effectual comforter. By study, by reading, by thinking, one may innocently divert and pleasantly entertain himself, as in all weathers, as in all fortunes.” Barrow
Books make excellent companions for the summer. I’m deciding what to read on my trip. Any suggestions?

If it’s been a while since you read To Kill A Mockingbird, then it’s time to slip that gem into your travel bag! I’ll be reading it (again) this summer. Also, thank you for tweeting my Emily Dickinson writing quote post. I just saw it there on your sidebar!
Good idea. I love to reread books. Amazing how the same book has different meaning at different stages of life. As it’s said. the book doesn’t change but we do.
I just read The Dove Keepers by Alice Hoffman and loved it. I have given you a couple of blog awards. See my latest post http://darlenefoster.wordpress.com/2012/06/25/news-and-awards-galore/
Thanks Darlene! Just visited your blog and we are so thankful for the awards but mainly for being part of the community with you.
I am reading this wonderful book by John Bevere -The Fear of the Lord. But, any book by this author is a good read.
Thanks. Have not read Bevere but will explore. I love to find new authors.
The Book That Made the World by Mangalwadi
Love the title. Thanks.
I’ve recently read, and loved, two very different autobiographies – ‘Bone’ by Jungian therapist Marion Woodman, about her journey through cancer, and ‘Secrets of the talking jaguar’ by Martin Prechtel, about his training as a shaman. Both are deeply spiritual, beautifully written, insightful books.
Oh boy. So many possibilities. Thanks.
Oh, I don’t even know where to start. I listed my top 5 paperback picks on my blog today if you’re looking for a paper copy. I also really loved THE HOMECOMING OF SAMUEL LAKE. Can’t get it out of my mind. If you are up for something more disturbing, but really fantastic, A LAND MORE KIND THAN HOME.
Your paperback picks blog is just in time. I love reading book reviews and learning about new reads. Thanks.
Glad the timing worked. Enjoy your trip.
Have you ever read, “Stepping Heavenward” by Elizabeth Prentiss? Highlights the ups and downs of married life with children, set in (I believe) the late Victorian Era. It can apply to women in general, too…anyone who has trials, and needs encouragement from God!
So many good ideas for reading. I have not read this selection. Thanks.
A book I have enjoyed reading and meditating upon while traveling cross-country is a collection of Walt Whitman’s fine poetry, as he celebrates the American outdoors and wide expanses so well! Thank you for reminding us of what great friends good books truly are!
Thanks, a good idea to choose writing that allows us to enhance our experience of the outdoors.
Depends where you are going. Trips are tricky. Thick book or thin book? Are you at risk of being spoken to thus interrupting precious reading time? A light read is the answer. Are you likely to get bored by the holiday? A seriously heavy tome could be the one. My all time favourite is Shantaram by Gregory Roberts.
No suggestions here, unless you are interested in children’s lit. Have to read 18 children’s books for my job over the summer.
