Reblogged from Writing Sisters:
"Children are made readers on the laps of their parents." - Emilie Buchwald
I have never known a writer who was not also a reader. My sister and I have always loved books. Our first library was the book mobile, a truck packed with books that came through our neighborhood once a week. The most memorable library growing up in West Virginia was in the basement of the fire station.
In every writer's life there is someone who has gone before them to show the way. We are thankful for our mother, Betsy Byars, who showed us through example the dedication and hard work necessary to become a writer. We are reposting from March 19 in her honor. Happy Mother's Day. Laurie and Betsy
You were blessed to have a “writer-Mother”! Mine was, of sorts, but I never remember her reading to me…but I still love to read and write books. We home educate our children, and even in their teens, I am reading to them every day…

ALL the elders in my home growing up read to me, whether living there or just visiting. We also had a bookmobile that came once a month, until I was in late junior high or early high school, when our town finally got its own library! There was not a single adult of my acquaintance who did not read to us. Such a blessing!
