“I am dreading the publication, for it will be impossible not to mind what is said. I have exposed my heart to be shot at.” ~Tolkien on the pending publication of Lord of the Rings

“I am not made for perilous quests,”  cried Frodo. “I wish I had never seen the Ring!  Why did it have to come to me?  Why was I chosen?”

“Such questions cannot be answered, “said Gandalf.  “You may be sure that it was not for any merit that others do not possess; not for any power or wisdom, at any rate. But you have been chosen and you must therefore use such strength and heart and wits as you have.”

JRR Tolkien

Be strong and courageous.  Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

  1. I love the Lord of the Rings, and must get back into reading them. My favorite line from the movie – “That is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”

Surely we need to think about these things in this life we live. Have a blessed day.

  2. Thankyou for this – it’s timely for me. I’m on the last pages of the child-of-my-heart book, that I have been working on alongside all my children’s books for twenty years, and the thought of sending it out into the world is terrifying.

  3. Someone pointed out to me that, more than any other piece of advice or teaching, Jesus of Nazareth said some version of, “Be not afraid.” That concept is mentioned more times than love, or forgiveness, or anything. BE NOT AFRAID. It is the key to everything.

  5. Wow, I love these quotes. I have felt the exact same way Frodo felt about writing – wondering why God didn’t give the things He gave me to someone else – someone who is a better writer and more on-the-ball than me. I think I’m going to have to copy down some of these quotes in my journal. They’re so great. I really love your blog!
